Becky In Denim

This is a portrait of my daughter from a photograph I took of her back in 1977 (when she about 2 years old).

Grid Comparison Example

Below is a photo which illustrates how useful clear grid sheets can be for comparing accuracy between study photo and painting.  On the left is my photo study and on the right is my completed painting  (forgive the glare of light on photo).

Please continue reading below the photo for information of how to use the grid.

First....your study photo and your painting must be exactly the same size. Since I trace directly from my study photo onto my porcelain, I am sure of the same size.

Second....you must properly align the photo and the painting with the grid. Pick a common spot on both photos (I chose the tear duct of the right eye on both) I then placed a corner of one grid square in that precise location on both the photo and the painting (using one grid sheet overlay for each). Next step (while keeping your common point in place at the tear duct) make certain that the alignment of the grid is straight. I line up the grid line straight with the outer edges of the pieces. Once you get everything lined up the same on both the painting and the photo, you are ready to compare features. (Sounds a lot more complicated than it really is! It is actually quite quick and easy)

Now, I can focus on individual features. For example, are the outer corners of her mouth located on the same horizontal and vertical lines as on the photo? How about the inner and outer corners of each eye? How accurate are the eyebrows on my painting compared with the photo? How does the outer silhouette compare?

Take a look at the vertical line which runs straight down from the inner tearduct of her right eye......down to the outer edge of her nose.....down to the outer corner of her mouth. See the alignment? Compare the alignment on the painting with the same alignment on the photo. That turned out pretty accurate.

Hopefully, you will also find a few areas where I missed the mark!! (I want you to use this as a learning exercise, so it doesn't hurt my feelings if you find areas which are "off") That is good training!

Now, had I taken time to compare under the grid on each painting, I would probably have a more accurate painting....but I was a bit lazy this time and didn't bother with it. That's OK....
but the grid sheets really DO help me a lot...even if after the fact as I'm presenting to you all today. In any case, I hope you enjoy the learning experience from my grid comparison.

Grid Sheets are available for purchase on my Supplies page.
